The Walt Disney Co. today filed plans to build a sprawling soundstage and production complex on the northwest corner of its Golden Oak Ranch in the Santa Clarita Valley.
The proposed Disney/ABC Studios at the Ranch would occupy 56 acres of the sprawling, 890-acre ranch just off Route 14 at Placerita Canyon Road, just south of Santa Clarita. Plans call for six pairs of soundstages, talent bungalows, administrative and production offices, storage and a commissary and other amenities.
The project would be a much-needed boost to Los Angeles' entertainment-industry economy, which has been buffeted by a production slowdown triggered by the recession and the decade-long outflow of film and TV jobs to other countries and states such as New Mexico, Lousiana and New York that offer generous tax breaks and credits.
Disney-owned ABC moved its own sitcom "Ugly Betty" from Los Angeles to New York last year, which helped spur the state Legislature to implement its own film tax credit program this year to curb so-called runaway production. Still, as Disney's announcement attests, the bulk of television production remains in Los Angeles.

Miley Cyrus has completed filming on The Last Song, and she is flying high towards her next project.
The Disney superstar has signed on to star in "Wings," a new film based on the best-selling Aprilynne Pike novel by the same name.
Fresh off her first film to hit the big screen in "Hannah Montana," Cyrus will play the leading role of Laurel, a 15-year-old girl who grows up sheltered and home-schooled in a small town.
When Laurel is forced to adjust to a big high school, her suspicions that she's not like everyone else are soon confirmed: Laurel sprouts wings and finds out she's a fairy.
Pike's novel, the first in a planned four-book series, was published in May. Temple Hill, the same co-production company behind the film "Twilight," will be producing this film, with Miley's mother Tish Cyrus serving as the executive producer.
Currently, Cyrus is currently in the Savannah, Georgia area filming her next movie, "The Last Song," which is based on a novel that romance author Nicholas Sparks ("The Notebook") wrote as a starring vehicle for Cyrus.
"Wings" will continue Disney's partnership with Miley well beyond the "Hannah Montana" franchise, which still has one season left.
Auditions and Casting Information for actors and extras to appear in Wings will be posted on the following site:
